Menorca: The Hidden Gem

Menorca

Hidden in the Balearic Sea, off of mainland Spain, is the island of Menorca. Although it is not as well known as it’s neighbor’s, Mallorca and Ibiza, Menorca remains one of Spain’s best-kept secrets! I would highly recommend this destination for couples that want to experience life in the Balearic Islands without the interruptions of tourism.

Upon arrival, you will instantly be amazed at how lush and green the island is. Unlike many other islands you will think of, Menorca is covered in trees and plants and gardens. Menorcan’s pride themselves on the preservation of nature on the island. The island is so well-preserved, UNESCO has named Menorca a biosphere reserve.

There are not many luxury hotel options on the island, but the few that are there offer unique experiences for travelers. I had the opportunity to explore the island with a Menorcan local through one of our preferred partners, Madrid & Beyond. As the island is not directed towards mass-tourism, I would definitely recommend touring the island with a local guide – something Ourisman Travel can book for you! This island would be a great addition to any Spain itinerary.

City of Mahón, Menorca

City of Mahón, Menorca

The two main cities to explore are Mahón and Ciutadella. Mahón is Menorca’s capital and is a short drive from the island’s airport. This city is filled with British-styled architecture and is located near a large, sheltered harbor. Menorca was actually seized by the British in the 1700s; they used the island primarily as a naval base during the War of the Spanish Succession. The naval base can still be found on the island today, as well as many British influences. Ciutadella is Menorca’s old capital that is best known for it’s medieval streets and architecture. You can truly experience the different phases of Menorcan history by exploring these two cities.

Menorca

Unlike many islands that have large strips of beaches, Menorca has small, inlet-type beaches around the entire island. Hiking the Camí de Cavalls, a trail that goes around the entire island, is a great way to explore the many beaches. Although a great hike, you won’t be able to experience the true variety of beaches on this island. I would recommend meeting a guide for an early morning hike and then hoping on a boat for the remainder of your day! A private boat ride is the perfect way to enjoy multiple beaches while still being able to relax and soak up that warm, Mediterranean sunshine.
