Belmond Maroma, Riviera Maya

Most famous as having THE best beach in Riviera Maya, the Belmond Maroma is the complete package for luxury travelers looking to immerse themselves in the destination while enjoying personal, polished service. Part of the Belmond brand (recently rebranded from Orient Express), the hotel speaks luxury fluently; you can expect to find all of the fine-details covered here. Staff will remember your name and your preferred drink order and a cool towel will appear seemingly out of thin air just at the moment before you realize you’re feeling a little too warm. Yet, despite all of this attention to the luxurious details, Maroma does not feel stuffy or over-produced. The resort has an air of barefoot luxury with a side of discreet elegance.

When you arrive, you will be treated to a welcome margarita and a short tour of the lush gardens as you are lead to your room.  As one of the first hotels to be built in Riviera Maya, this property is located on the best stretch of beach and the property is situated parallel to the beach rather than the perpendicular design of the more recent developments. Originally built as a private vacation villa, the resort also has a comfortable residential feel to it. The best benefit of the property design is that every room features amazing ocean views! Most rooms also have some outdoor space on a patio or balcony with hammocks just begging to be napped on. The white stucco buildings that house the rooms and suites are 3-stories tall and no room is alike featuring local Mayan art and textiles.

My favorite service offered at Belmond Maroma is the morning coffee delivery. Each morning, at the time specified by the guest, a tray of fresh brewed Mexican coffee (or tea, or juice) will be delivered to your front patio along with some amazingly ripe and juicy local fruits. Nobody knocks on your door or disturbs you while you catch those last few minutes of shut-eye, but you awake every morning knowing there’s a treat waiting for your enjoyment! I loved sitting on my front balcony watching the ocean sipping my coffee before starting my day!

For many guests, the Spa at the Belmond Maroma is the destination. Ranked #1 in Conde Nast Traveller’s Top 25 Spas in Mexico and Central America in 2013, the spa offers a serene retreat with a meditation garden, sauna and steam rooms, a famous fertility pool and, of course, a full menu of treatments featuring local Mayan ingredients and techniques. I had one of the best, most relaxing massages here. If you’re making an appointment, ask for Bruce!

The Belmond Maroma had traditionally catered to adult guests, especially couples looking for a romantic getaway, but they have recently opened up the resort to families, as well. The connecting room options are a bonus for families looking for flexible room configurations and the new kid-friendly activities offered in a game room and on the beach are a nice addition.

As a Virtuoso property, the Belmond Maroma, Riviera Maya offers the following amenities to Ourisman Travel clients:

  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability (Last upgrade from master suite to One bedroom suite. Upgrade not applicable from Dec 19 to Jan 1)
  • Daily full breakfast, for up to two in room guests
  • One 30 minutes body oil relaxing massage per person per stay
